QGIS

QGIS is a free and open-source cross-platform desktop geographic information system application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data.

The steps below demonstrate how to access Giraffe Geo layers using QGIS.

As a simple example of a next step, one can access a layer from Giraffe Geo, then use "Select Features by Freehand" to draw a loop around the desired features and select them. Then use "Save Only Selected Features" to save the selection as a new file.

Step 1

Open QGIS and click the "Add PostGIS Layers" icon on the left side (the postgresql elephant symbol).

Step 2

Click "New" to add a new connection.

Step 3

Add the current host name and database name given here: giraffegeo.com/data These are currently "db.v1.giraffegeo.com" and "giraffegeo11".

Enter your username and password and click "OK".

If you check "Save" next to the username and password, you will not have to reenter these each time that you add a layer.

Step 4

Click "Connect" to create the connection.

Step 5

The schemas will now be listed and you can click "Close".

Step 6

To add a layer from Giraffe Geo, select Layer -> Add Layer -> Add PostGis Layers.

Step 7

Select a schema and layer and then click "Add". We have chosen the US Census Bureau's county outline table.

Step 8

The layer will now appear in the viewer.
